FAQ

General

What is JPEGmini?

JPEGmini is a photo optimization technology that reduces the file size of JPEG photos by up to 5X while preserving the resolution and quality of the original photos.

Why should I use JPEGmini?

With JPEGmini you can store more photos on your hard drive and online photo service accounts, attach more photos to your emails and upload your photos faster to the web. If you have an image-intensive website, your pages will load faster, improving user experience, monetization, and SEO, and you’ll also reduce your storage and bandwidth costs.

Is JPEGmini a new file format?

No. JPEGmini files are in standard JPEG format, which can be viewed and edited by any browser, photo software or consumer device.

How is JPEGmini different from JPEG?

JPEGmini files are optimized JPEG files, whose parameters have been tuned to significantly reduce the file size without affecting perceptual quality.

How does JPEGmini compare with JPEG2000, JPEG-XR, WebP, or other image formats?

JPEGmini uses the standard baseline JPEG format, which is by far the established market leader in the image compression space. Newer formats such as JPEG2000, JPEG-XR and WebP have not gained significant market share yet. Although these formats presumably offer better compression than JPEG, JPEGmini’s perceptual recompression technology can produce JPEG files that are smaller in size than corresponding JPEG2000, JPEG-XR or WebP files.

How does JPEGmini work?

JPEGmini works by analyzing the input image using a unique quality detector which imitates the human visual system and based on this analysis applying the maximum amount of compression which will not cause visible artifacts. For further details, see the technology section.

How do I make sure that the quality of my photos is not affected by JPEGmini?

JPEGmini technology has undergone extensive user testing according to the ITU BT.500 standard, which proved that average users could not distinguish between original photos and JPEGmini photos. You are welcome to test the quality on your own photos: After optimizing them with JPEGmini, compare them side by side at 100% zoom (“Actual Size”), where each pixel on the screen corresponds to a pixel in the photo.

Can I print my photos after JPEGmini optimization?

Absolutely. Since JPEGmini does not alter the perceptual quality of your photos, you can print them at the same size you would print your original photos, and the prints will look exactly the same. Watch JPEGmini Pro Being tested under the loupe: https://youtu.be/xdndN5kobdg

Can I use JPEGmini after using other image editors or compression software?

Yes, JPEGmini accepts standard JPEG files as input, and outputs standard JPEG files as well. So any image editor, effects software, photo management software, etc. can be used before or after JPEGmini optimization. We recommend using JPEGmini as the last step in your photo processing flow, since any JPEG encoding (due to additional edits or processing) applied after JPEGmini optimization will eliminate the optimization benefits achieved by JPEGmini.

Does JPEGmini affect the metadata of my photos, such as the EXIF data?

All the EXIF metadata of the original photo is retained in the JPEGmini version. Users of the JPEGmini Server have an option to remove metadata if they want to further reduce the output file size.

What is the typical file size reduction I can expect from JPEGmini?

This depends on the resolution and quality of the original photo. For high-quality, full resolution photos produced by digital cameras, you can expect a reduction of 50%-80% in file size, while web images are typically reduced by 20-40%.

I tried JPEGmini and the file size reduction was very small. What happened?

JPEGmini achieves the highest file size reduction for first-generation photos created by digital cameras. Using photos that have been edited, re-sized or processed by photo editing software may cause lower reduction ratios.

Which input formats does JPEGmini support?

JPEGmini supports standard JPEG files with YCbCr and Monochrome color spaces. Other color spaces such as YCbCrK, CMYK, etc. are not supported.

What input resolutions does JPEGmini support?

JPEGmini supports files with a resolution of up to 128 Megapixels.

Does JPEGmini support RAW photos as input?

JPEGmini currently accepts only JPEG photos as input.

Where do I find my optimized photos?

The JPEGmini app supports two photo optimization mode: In the default mode, called “Optimize Originals”, JPEGmini replaces your original photos with the optimized JPEGmini versions. In this mode, you will find your optimized photos in the same location where the original photos resided, and under the same names. The only difference you will notice is that the file size of your photos is smaller than before.

The second mode is called “Export to Folder”. It is accessed by pressing the “Optimize Originals” button on the bottom left of the screen, or selecting “Preferences” from the settings menu. In this mode, you can select the folder in which the JPEGmini optimized files will be placed, and that’s where you will find your optimized photos. In “Export to Folder” mode your original photos are not modified.

How do I prevent the JPEGmini app from overwriting my original photos?

To preserve our original photos in “Optimize Originals” mode, you can create a copy of your photos and optimize the copy. In “Export to Folder” mode, the optimized photos are placed in the destination folder you have selected, and your original photos are not modified.

Does JPEGmini change the resolution of my photos?

By default, JPEGmini preserves the full resolution of your original photos. If you wish to reduce the resolution of your photos to further reduce their file size, open the Preferences dialog from the Settings menu, select “Export to Folder”, and check “Resize Photos”. You can select 3 default resize ratios, or manually set the maximum width or height for the output photos. Note that JPEGmini always preserves the aspect ratio of your original photos when resizing.

Why should I use the JPEGmini app?

The JPEGmini app frees up valuable space on your internal and external drives, and enables you to upload your photos to the web much faster. Once your photos are optimized, you can store many more of them in your online accounts (Picasa, DropBox, Flickr, etc.), and attach dozens of full resolution, original quality photos to your email messages.

How can I optimize my whole photo collection with the JPEGmini app?

You can drag the top-level folder where all your photos are stored, and all the photos contained in that folder and its sub-folders will be optimized. For example, you can drag your Pictures or My Pictures folder in Windows to optimize all of your photos. You can also drag a complete internal or external hard drive onto the app to optimize all of the photos in it.

Can I optimize my Dropbox folder with the JPEGmini app?

Sure, just drag it onto the app and all your Dropbox photos will be optimized. Once Dropbox detects that your local files have changed, the updated files will be synced to your Dropbox web account, reducing its size as well, so you’ll be able to store up to 5x more photos without paying for additional online storage space. And if you have other computers or mobile devices that use the same Dropbox account, the optimized files will be synced to all of them, freeing up storage space on each one of your devices.

Can I use JPEGmini with other online photo services?

Since JPEGmini makes your JPEG files smaller, uploading them to your online photo services becomes much faster, and results in less errors. In addition, JPEGmini optimization enables you to store more photos on your account without paying for more storage.

Does the JPEGmini app change the file format or other attributes of my photos?

No. JPEGmini optimizes the file size of your photos, but preserves all the other file attributes and metadata, such as creation date, photo capture date, location information, etc. Your photos remain in standard JPEG format, and can be viewed and edited by any browser, photo software or consumer device.

Does the JPEGmini app support RAW photos as input?

JPEGmini currently accepts only JPEG and HEIC photos as input.

What happens if I select a folder that contains both JPEG/HEIC and none JPEG/HEIC files in the JPEGmini app?

JPEGmini only processes JPEG/HEIC files, so none JPEG/HEIC files will be skipped.

Does the JPEGmini app optimize photos locally, or does it upload them to the web for processing?

The JPEGmini app processes your photos locally on your computer, and does not upload any photos to the web.

Which operating systems does JPEGmini Pro support?

JPEGmini Pro runs on:
macOS 11 (Big Sur) or higher / Windows 10 or higher

Which version of Adobe Lightroom does JPEGmini support?

The JPEGmini Adobe Lightroom Plug-in requires Lightroom 5 and above for Windows and Lightroom 4 and above for Mac.

Which version of Adobe Photoshop does JPEGmini support?

The JPEGmini Adobe Photoshop Extension is compatible with Photoshop CC (2015.1) and above.

In Lightroom, how is JPEGmini added to my workflow?

The JPEGmini Plugin for Lightroom is added in the export dialogue and is the last step in the export workflow. That means all the presets, metadata and other parameters that have been set will stay the same. The only change will be in the image file size.

In Lightroom File Settings, what JPEG Quality setting do you recommend so JPEGmini performs the best?

While we recommend exporting in the highest possible quality (90-100%), whatever you feel comfortable with will be OK. Remember, higher quality means higher savings.

Does the Photoshop Extension preserve metadata?

At the moment, no, but preserving metadata is on our roadmap.

In Photoshop, can I choose the quality before exporting, like in 'Save for Web'?

No, we designed the Photoshop extension to export the JPEG at quality 11 and then we optimize it. This is how we made the extension super fast and super simple.
